Primary School Feeding Program

Provision of Likuni Phala

Lusubilo provides meals to selected primary schools in Karonga and Chitipa districts. This provides a meal of cooked Likuni Phala (corn soya blend) of 300 g to each of the children in 43 schools for five days of the school week. This intervention has helped keep the children in school especially during the peak hunger season when children feel too weak to go school. In order to ensure community participation and ownership, the school committee, in collaboration with the Community Based Organizations (CBOs) contributed sugar, salt and firewood. Since the communities use firewood as fuel to prepare porridge, schools were mobilized to plant trees around the schools in order to replace what they were cutting and what they would use in the future.

Other school feeding activities

Construction of feeding shelters: Feeding shelters at primary schools promote hygiene, and provide a place where children can sit and eat their porridge during the rainy season. Primary schools under the school feeding program will be assisted with the construction of feeding shelters. The project will provide cement, iron sheets and timber, with communities contributing bricks, sand, water and labor.

Construction of rocket stoves

In order to promote hygiene and save firewood used when preparing meals, all target schools are supported with rocket stoves.
